The son of General Major Carl M. Motzfeldt, he enrolled as a student in 1827 and graduated as cand.jur. in 1838. He was editor-in-chief of ''Den Constitutionelle'' from 1841 to 1842. He mostly worked in the Ministry of Auditing until 1854, when he was appointed County Governor of ''Finmarkens Amt'' (today's Troms and Finnmark).〔(''Personalhistorie for Trondhjems by og omegn i et tidsrum af circa 1 1/2 aarhundrede'' ), by Chr. Thaulow.
